Free Video Recovery recovers video files that were lost, deleted or corrupted.

Practically anyone who has used a computing device has had the misfortune of accidentally deleting a file or misplacing a file or having a file become corrupted. Free Video Recovery is a freeware tool that is designed to find and recover such files when they are videos, images or audio files.

Free Video Recovery offers a simple user interface that is intuitive. It has two tabs. The first tab is for scanning the various internal, external and network drives that your computer has access to. The second tab is the recover tab. This is where the program will present files that have gotten misplaced, deleted or corrupted and may be recoverable. The UI even has helpful tips that automatically appear as you hover over items, and this makes it straightforward to find your way.

The biggest problem with this program is the scan engine. It is not sophisticated. It is also not optimized. Modern PCs with multi-core processors can brute force the scan because they have a lot of resources and processing power to spare. At the time this software was originally released, scans would take a ridiculously long time—there are not exactly fast with newer PCs—and systems were unresponsive during the scanning and even prone to crashes that required you to start all over.

A poor user experience is exacerbated by the fact that recovery fails more often than it succeeds. If the misplacement, deletion or corruption has just occurred, recovery may work. But the more you use your system, the chance of success drops considerably. Still, the program is free, and it may be worth a shot if you have a video, image or audio file that you would rather not lose.
